Tung Fort Information Guide : Hike, History & Must-Sees

Tung Fort : A Brief Overview Tung Fort, also known as “Ghatrakshak” (Protector of the Pass), was built in the Maval region to oversee the traffic passing through the Bor Ghat. From the fort, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Lohagad, Visapur, and Pavangad.

Tung Fort places to visit

  1. Hanuman Temple, Ganesha Temple, Water Moat, Tungidevi Temple

    Due to its small size, you can explore the entire Gadmatha in just one hour. The route from Tungwadi to the fort passes near the Maruti Temple. This temple can accommodate 5-6 people for overnight stays. A short distance from the temple, there are steps leading up to the fort. Along the way, you will encounter the Hanuman Temple. Further on, you will see the entrance gate with a Gomukhi (cow’s mouth) structure. Once you enter through this gate, you will reach the top of the fort. To your right is the Ganesha Temple. Behind the temple is a water moat. From here, you can proceed to the Balekilla (upper fort).

    The Tungadevi Temple is located on the top of the Ballikilla (small fort). In front of the temple is a cave carved into the rock. During the non-monsoon season, two to three people can stay in this cave. You can see the fort and return to Lonavala in one day.

Tung Fort how to reach ?

All the paths leading to Tung Fort pass through the village of Tungwadi at the fort’s base. It takes about 45 minutes to climb from Tungwadi to the fort. As the top of the fort is small, you can explore the entire fort in an hour.

  • Tung Fort via Ghusalkhamb Phata
    Take a train to Lonavala Railway Station, which is the nearest railhead to Tung Fort. From Lonavala Railway Station, catch an ST bus heading towards Bhamburde or Ambavne. Get off at the Ghusalkhamb Phata bus stop, which is approximately 26 km away.
    From Ghusalkhamb Phata, embark on a 1.5-hour trek along the 8 km long trail to reach Tungwadi, the village at the base of the fort. From Tungwadi, it takes about 45 minutes to climb to the top of Tung Fort.

  • Brahmanoli – Keware
    Start your journey by visiting the Tikona Fort. After exploring the fort, descend to the nearby Tikona Peth village.
    From Tikona Peth, follow the road towards Kale Colony. This route will take you through the village of Brahmanoli.
    In Brahmanolik, you’ll find the Pawane Reservoir. Take a boat ride from here and enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake.
    Your boat ride will end at Keware village, which is located on the other side of the reservoir.
    From Keware village, it’s a short 20-minute walk to Tungwadi, the village at the base of Tung Fort.
    If a boat ride is not available, you can follow this alternative route to reach Tungwadi: Take an ST Bus from Tikona Peth At 11:00 AM, board an ST Mahamandal bus from Tikona Peth heading towards Kamset-Morve. Get Off at Tungwadi Phata Disembark at the Tungwadi Phata bus stop, which is located just beyond Morve village. Hike to Tungwadi From Tungwadi Phata, it’s a short 30-minute walk to Tungwadi village, the base of Tung Fort.

  • Tungwadi via Tungwadi Phata

    Take an ST Bus from Tikona Peth At 11:00 AM, board an ST Mahamandal bus from Tikona Peth heading towards Kamset-Morve. These buses are frequent and reliable, providing a convenient and affordable way to reach Tungwadi.
